Head of the Budget and Finance Committee, MP Ibrahim Kanaan stressed Thursday that passing the 2020 state budget provides advantages and reassurances and contributes to boosting both local and international confidence in Lebanon.
Following his meeting with Maronite Patriarch Beshara Boutros Rai in Bkerke, Kanaan stressed that the position must be consensual in order for the budget to be passed successfully, noting that the most important thing is that the political blocs and the Lebanese people must be aware of the importance of this step, so that when the parliament convenes to discuss the budget, nothing else will be on the agenda.
He pointed out that the solution is political; adding that they are capable of rescuing the country and Lebanon is capable with a cabinet and a reform budget that does not include any added taxes to get out of the crisis.
Commenting on the legislative session, he reiterated that their position is clear regarding the legislation of urgent matters, stating that the general amnesty draft law was born dead.
“Joint efforts are needed to save Lebanon and the collapse of the institutions means the collapse of the state,” Kanaan said.
On the governmental issue, the deputy explained that the president is working in order to facilitate the formation process, noting that the importance of the discussions held at the political level is in the results that will be reached.
Kanaan added that he discussed with Patriarch Rai the general situation, mainly the financial issues.
