Pompeo: Rafic Hariri’s killers must be brought to justice

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Hezbollah linked individuals involved I the terrorist attack that led to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri must be brought to justice.

Pompeo’s comments were made in a statement on the 15th anniversary of Hariri’s assassination, saying that the operation was an “act of mass murder that resulted in the deaths of 21 others and injuries of 266 victims in Beirut.”

“Ending impunity is imperative to guarantee Lebanon’s stability, and sovereignty,” he said in a statement on Friday.

He also reiterated the US support to the work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Pompeo also noted that “Hezbollah has showed through its terrorist and illegal activities that it is more interested in its own interests and those of its patron, Iran, than the interests of the Lebanese people.”

“The US continues to stand proudly beside the Lebanese people in its peaceful calls for reforms, transparency and accountability,” he stressed.

Pompeo concluded by saying that Iran is "stifling young Iraqis and Lebanese who want nothing more than a clean and sovereign government."
