Libyan authorities decide to disband “illegal” militias

The Libyan authorities declared that they decided to dissolve all militias and armed groups that do not come under the State authority.

The move was announced by head of the national assembly, Mohammed al-Megaryef, in the eastern city of Benghazi, a day after the city’s residents demonstrated against the militias in violence leaving at least 11 people dead and over 70 injured.

The authorities also decided to put in place an "operations room" in Benghazi joining the army, interior ministry forces and defense ministry brigades including former rebels.

In this context, they called on the army to impose its authority by putting its own officers at the head of brigades formed following the 2011 revolt, which escalated into civil war and toppled the regime of Moamer Kadhafi.
