Seek knowledge, even from behind the bars

The “Association of Justice and Mercy”, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Internal Security Forces organized a graduation ceremony for 97 prisoners who studied computer skills, languages and drawing in Roumieh Central Prison, in the presence of Social Affairs Minister Wael Abou Faour, representative of Interior and Municipalities Minister as well as a number of judges and officials.        

In this context, Abou Faour delivered a speech whereby he hoped that the Ministry of Social Affairs will contribute in turning prisons into more humanized places, not by using the “big stick”, but by helping prisoners assume their own social responsibilities.           

Abou Faour stressed the need to expand and rehabilitate the prisons and ensure all the required supplies, because “this matter has nothing to do with the form of the government, but it is linked to its spirit and content”.             

Abou Faour called on the government to reach out to those concerned about the issue, “especially that the prisoners declared their will to help ensure better standard".                

The Minister revealed that two agreements were signed, the first between Ministry of Social affairs and the United Nations program for protection of prisoners from drugs, and the second between the Ministry and SGBL  to rehabilitate the prisoners who completed their sentence.
