Sleiman calls for avoiding internal conflicts through dialogue

Lebanese President Michel Sleiman stressed on Monday that food supply is a "right to every human being and a basic need to live," noting that there should not be people suffering from food shortages in the world.             

In a speech delivered during the World Food Day celebration at the UNESCO, Sleiman noted that the world economic crisis revealed that the global economy must focus on productive sectors, mainly the agricultural and industrial ones.                          

In this context, Sleiman called for reconsidering the food security strategies adopted worldwide.                             

On the other hand, Sleiman stressed the importance of developing new mechanisms that allow authorities to impose the UN Charter and force the states seeking occupation, including Israel, to retreat and comply with the UN resolutions. He also called for avoiding internal conflicts through the adoption of dialogue.                  

The President said that social justice must prevail over international organizations, calling on the government, especially the Ministry of Agriculture, to propose the new legislations which conform to the status quo.                         

Sleiman considered that food security and food safety could not be separated, adding that “the citizens’ health is among our priorities; therefore we must activate food control”.
