Second ‘Vatileaks’ trial opens Monday

Claudio Sciarpelletti, a computer technician in the Vatican Secretariat of State and alleged partner of the papal butler, Paolo Gabriele, will appear before court in the Vatican, in the second “VatiLeaks” trial which began with the loss of documents from the Pontifical Apartment.

48-year-old Claudio Sciarpelletti is under investigation for "aiding and abetting” Paolo Gabriele, the papal butler, who was convicted of aggravated theft for stealing or photocopying private Vatican correspondence -- including letters to and from the pope.

The Vatican court's indictment of Sciarpelletti was released Aug. 13 along with the indictment of Gabriele.

The Vatican Court will hear from five witnesses: the Pope's butler, Paolo Gabriele, now in prison sentenced to one year and six months for aggravated theft, the deputy commander of the Swiss Guard, William Kloter, the commander of the Vatican gendarmerie, Domenico Giani and the gendarme Gauzzi Broccoletti.
