Jumblatt: With Salam’s death, we lost an irreplaceable Arab and Islamic memory

In his weekly stance to Al Anbaa newspaper, National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblatt said that with the death of Assem Salam, Lebanon lost “an irreplaceable historical, intellectual and Islamic and Arab memory.”

Assem Salam, the former head of the Beirut Order of Engineers and Architects, died Sunday at the age of 88.

Jumblatt said that he and Salam shared the same views throughout the most difficult times, “in sickness and in health”, adding “he has always been an elegant, cultivated and experienced man with firm stances and opinions.”

Jumblatt said that Salam believed that without Islam, there would be no Arabism; “he believed in the Islam of Renaissance, the Islam of Omayyad, Abbasid and Andalucía at particular stages."

“Salam left this world in peace, reassured and satisfied."
