REPORT: Israel threatens to topple Abbas in case his UN bid succeeds

The Israeli threats reached their peak against the Palestinian authority and its President Mahmoud Abbas to thwart the Palestinian UN bid to become a recognized state.                 

In this context, the Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman who is conducting the campaign has the support of the government and the right wing after taking positions considered so extremist that he even threatened to cancel the Oslo Accords, to dismantle the Palestinian authority and to reoccupy the West Bank. Accordingly, Lieberman is considering a draft document that would offer the Palestinians immediate recognition of statehood within provisional borders as an incentive for dropping their UN bid.               

However, Lieberman has placed four conditions for the establishment of the temporary Palestinian State which he proposed:                

- The Palestinians committing to avoid taking any unilateral measures, especially having recourse to international courts such as The Hague or elsewhere.               

- Conducting negotiations over the borders and security without determining a timeframe.               

- Expanding the influence of the Palestinian authority from 40% of the West Bank to around 50%.               

- Israel will not suspend constructions in large settlements blocs, in Ariel, Ma'aleh Adumim and Gush Etzion.                            

It is worth mentioning that the Israeli threats also include the annulment of work permits to thousands of Palestinians and suspend the transfer of the Palestinian tax funds to the Authority.
