Morsi's supporters and opponents to demonstrate on Tuesday

Egypt's main opposition coalition on Sunday announced its rejection of a constitutional referendum set by Islamist President Mohamed Mursi for Dec. 15.

In a statement read by its spokesman, the National Salvation Front also called for mass protests on Tuesday against a draft constitution that it said lacked consensus.

For their part, Egyptian Islamists called for a demonstration on Tuesday to support the Morsi's constitutional referendum.

Morsi met one of the opposition's demands overnight, rescinding his Nov. 22 decrees that gave him near unrestricted powers. But he insisted on going ahead with the referendum on a constitution adopted by his Islamist allies.

This as, AFP reported that "Egyptian F-16 fighter jets made low passes over the center of Cairo on Sunday in a rare maneuver by the air force over the capital."

Earlier on Saturday, Egypt's military, stepping into the crisis said in a statement that only dialogue could avert "catastrophe". State broadcasters interrupted their programs to read out an army statement telling feuding factions that a solution to the upheaval in the most populous Arab nation should not contradict "legitimacy and the rules of democracy". The statement also called for a "serious" national dialogue.
