REPORT: Three bishops to compete for succession of Patriarch Hazim

The preparations for the election of a new Greek Orthodox Patriarch kicked off whereby three candidates will be competing at the Patriarchal Monastery of Our Lady of Balamand, on Monday. The three bishops are Saba Esber, Aleppo Bishop Boulos Yaziji and Brazil Bishop Damascinos Mansour, all of whom are Syrian nationals.

The 21 bishops will elect one of the 3 candidates, whereby a two-third majority must be reached; otherwise, a half plus one majority in the second round should be acquired by one candidate to become Patriarch.

In this context, Bishop Antonio al-Chadrawi, the pastor of the Archdiocese of Mexico, stressed that politics will not interfere in the elections, noting that no one will have any objection on the results.

He added that they do not separate between the Christians of Syria and Lebanon.
