REPORT: Fatah marks anniversary in Gaza for the first time since 2007

The Fatah Movement commemorated, for the first time since 2007, its 48th anniversary in a festival held in the Serail Square in central Gaza, where tens of thousands of Fatah supporters who came from different regions alongside Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas, gathered and waved with Palestinian and Fatah flags and hoisted posters of Abbas. During the festival, PA Chief Abbas delivered a speech on the screen, whereby he stressed the importance of national unity.          

The participants considered that the huge crowd that attended the festival represent a sort of referendum proving the legitimacy of the national authority and establishing the Fatah Movement's position in the forefront as the defender of the people.         

On the other hand, members of al-Aqsa Martyr Brigades, a Fatah branch off, who wore military uniforms without holding any kind of arms, were surrounding the enormous stage which was specifically built for the occasion. The stage took the form of the "Dome of the Rock" of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, where photos of late President Yasser Arafat and current President Abbas were placed, as well as posters depicting a number of Fatah martyrs.
