REPORT: Roumieh prison incident: suicide or murder?

An inmate, 34 years of age and identified as G.S., committed suicide by hanging himself in one of Roumieh Prison’s toilets located in bloc B, using a woolen shawl.

The Palestinian prisoner, who was already sentenced to death, had previously attempted to kill himself twice while he was imprisoned in Bloc D.

In this context, the security sources said that the coroner confirmed the suicidal after examining the body.

Sources revealed that the reasons behind the suicide are psychological; resulting from the death sentence and the isolation he was suffering from due to his disgraceful guilt. This situation has caused him depression which led him to attempt suicide previously.

However, another story circulated claiming that the prisoner was killed by a number of other inmates, for personal reasons.

On the other hand, a more dangerous version suggested that Fatah al-Islam groups might have implemented the Shariaa against Ghassan, noting that the coroner’s report included that there were bruisers all over the body, which shows that the victim was beaten before being killed.

The prison’s administration and sources from the Islamists inmates completely denied the last version.
