REPORT: Maronites in Cyprus celebrate St. Maroun’s day

The Maronite community in Cyprus celebrated St. Maroun’s day in a mass headed by the Archbishop of the Maronite Archdiocese of Cyprus Joseph Soueif, and attended by the Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias as well as a large crowd including officials, diplomats and believers.

Archbishop Soueif reiterated the call on all Christians, mainly Maronites, to return to the villages from where they were displaced during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

For his part, the Cypriot president hoped that a solution will be reached to solve the issue of the island’s division, in order for the Maronites to be able to return to their towns and for Cyrus to remain a symbol for cultural diversity.

However, Cyprus’ Maronites, who are around 6,000 people, reiterated their attachment to coexistence, stressing the importance of the strong relations with Lebanon.

On the other hand, the Maronite church honored the president, noting that his era witnessed the greatest support for the Maronites.
