Three Lebanese Shiites killed in Syria clashes

3 Lebanese Shiites were killed and 14 others were injured in confrontations in Syria, a Hezbollah source told AFP on Sunday, pointing out that they were in a self-defense position.

Hadi al-Abdallah of the Syrian Revolution General Commission said fighting broke out on Saturday after Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, who are in control of eight Syrian border villages, tried to expand their sphere by moving into three adjacent villages that were in the hands of the rebel Syrian Free Army.

This came hours after the opposition’s Syrian National Council accused the Shiite party of “intervening in military operations” and “launching an armed attack” in the city of al-Qusayr in Homs to support the Syrian regime in its fight against opposition fighters.

Hezbollah, one of Lebanon's strongest political factions, supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and says that dialogue between him and Syrian rebels will be the only way to defuse Syria's 23-month-old conflict.
