Sukkarieh: Prices of medications in Lebanon are still chaotic

Former MP Ismail Sukkarieh said that prices of medications in Lebanon are chaotic, pointing out that the prices of 1088 drugs are still higher in Lebanon than in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, contrary to decision 1/208 stipulating that medications should be registered in Lebanon with a lower price compared to the same drugs registered in Gulf countries and In Jordan.

In a press conference held in Baalbek on Sunday, Sukkarieh said that merchants intervene to raise the prices of drugs every week or many times per week under the pretext of currency appreciation. “However, these merchants try to avoid lowering the price in case of currency depreciation.”

He added that item 10 of decision 1/208 stresses the necessity to look into drug prices every 3 months.

Sukkarieh praised Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil for his “bold and responsible position”, pointing out that people have the duty to defend their right of access to affordable medications using democratic means.
