Lebanon’s private schools participate in UCC open ended strike

Most private schools were closed on Monday and those that opened their doors are holding sit-ins. In this equation, children fell victim to the sharp divide between supporters and opponents of the UCC's open ended strike.     

A number of teachers formed groups and deployed outside private schools, asking teachers and students to join the strike.        

However, in many other places, administrations remained adamant on not closing their doors despite the fact that the majority of students did not show up. In addition to this, school administrations failed to show any solidarity with teachers participating in the strike.     

Education Minister Hassan Diab met with a delegation from educational institutions led by Father Boutros Azar who had stressed that schools will open their doors in the upcoming days, pointing out that some of them were threatened.       

In turn, Minister Diab said that the decision to postpone official exams was in the hands of the Ministry of Education. He called on all parties to respect freedom of speech and to abstain from imposing their opinions on others.
