Maronite Bishops hold cabinet accountable of deteriorating living conditions

The Council of Maronite Bishops convened on Monday in Bkerke under the chairmanship of Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai and in the presence of Cardinal Nasrallah Sfeir, to discuss national and ecclesial affairs.

Following the meeting, the Maronite Bishops considered that carrying out the upcoming parliamentary elections on the basis of the1960's electoral law is “a dangerous escape from national responsibility”.

The bishops stressed the necessity of holding the elections on their constitutional due time on the basis of a law that provides apt representation.

The Council noted that Lebanon is in dire need to the participation of all its factions, pointing out that the sectarian tensions witnessed in some regions lead to serious repercussions.

In this context, the council held the Lebanese government responsible for the deteriorating living conditions in Lebanon, calling on all parties to hold dialogue in regards to the salaries and ranks series.

The Council expressed its concerns over the emergence of weapons and the kidnapping incidents.

On another note, the Council praised the Pope's resignation.

It is worth noting that the Head of Catholic schools Father Boutros Azar, and Head of the Head of private school teachers association Nehme Mahfoud joined the bishops in their meeting.
