REPORT: Connelly from Ain al-Tineh: Elections must be held on time

The US ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly expressed on Monday the US concern over the security situation in Lebanon and at the borders with Syria, stressing the need that all parties should commit to the self-dissociation policy.

Following her meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain al-Tineh, Connelly condemned the continuous violations carried out by the Syrian army at the Lebanese borders, stressing that President Obama will help in implementing a fast political transition in Syria, to form a democratic government which can protect the rights of its citizens.

On the other hand, Connelly asserted the importance of holding the elections on time, praising the efforts deployed by the President Michel Sleiman, Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Speaker Nabih Berri in order to reach agreement between all the parties over a new electoral law.

“The US supports the democratic process in Lebanon and the Lebanese constitution,” she added.
