UCC demonstration marches towards Tele Liban

The Union Coordination Committee ended its sit in on Tuesday in front of the Education and Higher Education Ministry, where demonstrators marched towards Tele Liban in Telt el Khayat region, Beirut.

Head of Union Coordination Committee Hanna Gharib held the officials who are delaying the referral of the ranks and salaries series to the Parliament responsible for the "loss" of the academic year.

During a protest joining students and teachers outside the Education Ministry, Gharib stressed that they will head to the Serail in Baabda on Wednesday, to the port on Thursday and to the airport on Friday.
On the other hand, Gharib addressed the Economic Committees, saying: “you are responsible for the pressure exerted on the cabinet, for preventing the referral of the pay scale and for refusing to contribute to its funding”.

Gharib noted that the sit-in reflected a social national scene, including students and teachers calling for restoring Lebanon’s unity and dignity.

Heavy crowds, including teachers and students participating in the protest staged by the UCC blocked the road outside the Education Ministry, UNESCO.

The Union Coordinating Committee launched its open ended strike on February 19th 2013 after making repeated called on Prime Minister Mikati to validate the new salary scale and consequently refer it to Parliament for ratification.

The government endorsed a minimum wage hike last December, which became retroactively operative in February 2012, for both private and public sector employees.

The minimum monthly wage was fixed at $450, effectively rising by $116 (LL175,000) for those on the minimum pay.

Upon the recommendation of the Central Bank and Economic Committees, the Prime Minister has suggested that the payment of the wage hike be made in installments to keep inflation under control and avoid a widening budget deficit.

The union leader Hanna Gharib, however insists that no compromise on their demands will be accepted, stating that the salary hike should be paid in one go using alternative resources.
