Tunisia’s shoe-waving protesters call on women’s minister to resign

Dozens of Tunisians waving with shoes staged on Friday a protest where they called on the minister of women's affairs, Sihem Badi, to resign accusing her of failing to stand up to the ruling Islamists.

Minister Badi has been strongly criticized for months by activists from the civil society over her ties with the ruling Ennahda party.

Following similar protests staged earlier this week, around fifty MPs signed on Thursday a no-confidence motion against the minister, as reported by the official TAP news agency.

In this context, during Friday’s demonstrations, the protesters chanted: "Badi get out!" and "Government of terrorism, minister of rape."

Demands for her departure have increased since the rape of a three-year-old girl at a children's nursery in the Tunis suburb La Marsa. The main suspect was arrested last Sunday.
