Mubarak wins appeal but to remain behind bars

Egyptian state media reported on Monday that an Egyptian court approved the appeal calling for the release of former president Hosni Mubarak on charges pertaining to the death of protesters. However, he will remain in custody as investigations continue into fraud charges.

This comes after Mubarak's lawyer, Farid al-Dib, requested from the Cairo court to consider his conditional release on charges of corruption and complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ousted him.

Mubarak’s lawyer argued that Mubarak has already spent the maximum period of time in custody for a term of temporary detention.

This as a judicial source confirmed that Mubarak’s release “is not even probable” since he faces other charges, including embezzlement, likely to keep him under detention.
