Mikati: Chiyah incident aims at provoking specific reactions

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati stressed on Sunday morning that firing two rockets at Beirut’s southern suburb aims at creating a security chaos and comes as an attempt to provoke specific reactions, calling on “all parties to deal with this delicate case wisely in order to prevent those who seek strife from reaching their goals.”

He added that the security forces kicked off their investigations to reveal the circumstances of this “act of vandalism” and to arrest the perpetrators, urging the political leaders and figures to cooperate in order to maintain calmness during this critical situation.

Meanwhile, Mikati followed up on the case with caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel who examined the scene of the incident, calling on the Lebanese Army to take the necessary measures, conduct the needed investigations and to scan the damages caused by the explosion.

Two rockets hit Beirut’s southern suburb on Sunday wounding several people, including Syrian nationals. One of the rockets landed in a car sales yard next to a busy road junction in the Chiyah neighborhood while the other hit an apartment several hundred meters away.

The rockets launchers were later found in the hills located between Bsaba and Aitat in Mount Lebanon.
