Mikati denies al-Liwaa claims on his resignation

The information office of PM Najib Mikati denied the claims made by al-Liwaa newspaper that the premier discussed resigning from his post with MP Robert Ghanem. Mikati’s information office issued a statement saying that these remarks are untrue.

The statement added that his meeting with MP Robert Ghanem on the sidelines of the 46th meeting for the executive council of the Arab Organization for Supreme Audit Institutions held in the Grand Serail, only touched upon the possible amendments that will be brought to the electoral law.   

The statement stressed that PM Mikati’s stances regarding funding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) are well-known and clear for all. The statement quoted Mikati as saying that he is following up on the mechanisms that will enable the cabinet to make a final decision regarding Lebanon’s share of the STL budget.

Al-Liwaa daily quoted parliamentary sources on Thursday as saying that PM Najib Mikati held a private meeting with Head of the Administration and Justice Parliamentary Committee MP Robert Ghanem on the sidelines of a dinner he hosted in the Grand Serail in honor of the regulatory bodies.    

The sources said that Mikati told Ghanem that his “resignation will be ready” if his allies in the cabinet, notably Hezbollah, Amal movement and the FPM, will not be convinced of the importance of funding the STL.
