MP Aoun slams efforts to extend Kahwaji's mandate

Change and Reform Leader MP Michel Aoun held Friday a press conference whereby he slammed efforts being exerted in order to "illegally" extend the mandate of Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Jean Kahwaji, noting that "those who call for the said extension want to monopolize the constitution".

"There are thousands of competent officers who are able to serve as Army Commanders. The extension of Kahwaji's term is illegal and we have the right to challenge it," MP Aoun said.

He also stressed that the army is a deterrent force, noting that the concerned authorities have failed to implement the constitution in this regard.

On another note, MP Aoun said that caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati can adopt the dissociation policy in regards to the Syrian conflict, adding however that it is impossible to apply this rule regarding the incidents taking place in Lebanon, mainly in the border town of Arsal and the southern city of Sidon
.

MP Aoun also noted that "those who are tasked with managing the country's affairs are undermining the constitution and leading the Lebanese state to bankruptcy".

"Should the mandate of Kahwaji be extended, we will resort to the constitutional council and to the Shura council to voice our rejection," MP Aoun added.
