REPORT: LAF Commander Kahwagi's term extended on Army Day

Army Commander General Jean Kahwagi issued on Wednesday the Order of the Day to mark the occasion of the 68th Army Day.

In the Order, Commander Kahwagi said that fear of vacuum in the military institution would not have existed had political life in Lebanon been one of stability without internal rivalries.

He urged political leaders to spare the Lebanese  constitutional institutions political and personal disputes, calling for respecting the constitutional principles and the Taef accord.

Later in the day, caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn signed a decree stipulating the extension of the LAF Commander General Jean Kahwagi and the Chief of Staff Walid Salman's terms for a two year period.

Kahwagi's term, which officially ends in September when he turns 60, had been the center of debates among Lebanese political factions.

While most parties granted their voice of confidence to the extension of his term, the Free Patriotic Movement voiced rejection,  dubbing the move "illegal."
