Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Rai calls for peaceful solution to Syrian crisis

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Rai called on Thursday for settling the Syrian crisis through dialogue and negotiations, hoping to find a peaceful solution during the meeting of US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov which is expected to be held today.

Speaking from Beirut airport before heading for Romania, Cardinal Rai said the number of Syrian refugees has reached 5 millions, noting that both the Christian and Muslim communities are among the affected.

Separately, Cardinal Rai stressed the need to expedite the formation of a new government, slamming attempts to set preconditions for the cabinet formation.

"President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam shall use their constitutional authority in order to form a new cabinet without any preconditions," Cardinal Rai said.
