Zaspkin: Lebanon’s stability under international umbrella

The Russian ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zaspkin stressed on Thursday the need to create the appropriate atmosphere to implement the decisions expected to be issued by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) based on the proposals presented by Russia and the United States. He added that the diplomatic efforts must continue in order to reach a political settlement for the Syrian crisis.

Following his meeting with caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, Zaspkin declared that Russia will keep on deploying efforts with the concerned parties in order to hold a Geneva II conference aimed at commencing a transitional stage in Syria. He pointed out that the strategic objective sought in Syria is ending the war, restoring peace and establishing a secular sovereign state where the rights of the various components of the community are respected.

Answering a question on Lebanon’s stability amid the regional events, the Russian ambassador stressed that “an international umbrella is protecting Lebanon’s stability especially under the current circumstances.”
