Abdullah Azzam Brigades: rocket attack not our doing

The al-Qaeda affiliated group Abdullah Azzam Brigades denied responsibility for last week’s rocket attack on Israel, accusing Hezbollah and Syrian President Bashar Assad’s men.
Last Tuesday, one rocket fired from south Lebanon landed into Israel, prompting Israeli troops to retaliate by firing six artillery shells.

In a statement published on Islamic websites and on a Facebook page used by Islamic groups, Abdullah Azzam Brigades assured that this attack was carried out for the benefit of Bashar Assad and Hezbollah, his Shiite ally in Lebanon, “at the hands of a group that has ties to the [Hezbollah] and is known by us”.

The group pointed to an alleged statement that was attributed to it by media outlets inside and outside Lebanon, citing Hezbollah as the source. The group warned Sunnis in Lebanon of Syrian intelligence ploys and that the Hezbollah security apparatus may infiltrate some groups or factions.

Abdullah Azzam is a Jordanian man with Palestinian origins. He is the founder of Arab jihadist groups in Afghanistan where al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s activities emerged.
