Charge d'affaires Azzi says death toll of Indonesian boat disaster reached 34

The Charge d'affaires at the Lebanese embassy in Jakarta Joanna Azzi reported on Wednesday to caretaker Foreign Affairs Minister Adnan Mansour that the number of bodies of the Indonesian boat disaster has climbed to 34 after further tests revealed the identity of child Ibrahim al-Mahmoud.

Azzi noted that al-Mahmoud’s body along with 33 others will arrive to Lebanon on Thursday the 31st of October at 12:30 afternoon.

The bodies will be escorted by a delegation of the Higher Relief Commission under the chairmanship of HRC Secretary General Ibrahim Bachir.

On Friday September 26, dozens of Lebanese nationals hailing from the town of Akkar were reported dead after a boat carrying them to Australia sank off the coast of Indonesia.

Preliminary information showed that an Iraqi national known as Abou Salah was in charge of transferring the persons to Indonesia before reaching Australia.
The boat was headed for Australia's Christmas Island.
