Sleiman meets with Rai, discusses social and political issues

President Michel Sleiman met Thursday with Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai at the Baabda Presidential Palace and discussed several social and political issues.

Earlier in the day, Sleiman stressed that the tragedy of the Indonesian boat must be an incentive leading the authorities to improve the political and economic situation in the country, so that citizens will not resort to drastic means of immigration.

Separately, Sleiman received at the Baabda Presidential Palace a delegation from the southern city of Sidon, including former PM Fouad Siniora, MP Bahia Hariri, Mufti Sheikh Salim Sousan and Mayor Mohammad al-Saudi. The discussions focused mainly on the situation in Sidon and the measures implemented to prevent any security incidents from creating chaos.

On Friday September 26, dozens of Lebanese nationals hailing from the towns of Akkar were reported dead after a boat carrying them to Australia sank off the coast of Indonesia.

The airplane carrying the bodies of the victims arrived to Beirut airport today.
