Jumblatt urges authorities to preserve Beirut’s heritage

The head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt called Monday on the concerned authorities to preserve Beirut’s cultural heritage, noting that the country is currently witnessing a state of political stagnation.

"If reports stating the cancellation of a plan to demolish the Massad Stairs (in the Beirut neighborhood of Mar Mikhael) turn out to be true, then this is good news for Beirut's heritage, which is gradually undergoing eradication,” Jumblat said in his weekly statement to in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa website.

"What about the Fouad Boutros Bridge project that could lead to the destruction of several old buildings in the region of Ashrafieh?" he continued; stressing that such a project is totally rejected.

In this context, Jumblatt pointed out that the residents of the Ashrafieh must be consulted in this regard.
