Labor Ministry wage plan was not discussed, Nahhas Confirms

Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas said on Tuesday that the wage adjustment plan submitted by the Ministry of Labor to cabinet was not discussed.

“It was rather replaced by a verbal proposal put forth by PM Najib Mikati after the latter had announced that he was engaging in consultations with the economic bodies and the GLC and that his plan drew the consent of both sides,” he added.

Nahhas confirmed that these consultations were carried out outside his ministry and the Price Index Committee.

The labor minister added in a statement that “the Change and Reform bloc ministers were opposed to the fact that the plan was not discussed by the concerned authorities in line with the constitution.”

In his concluding remarks, Nahhas said that Mikati’s proposal is not related in any form to his plan; “they rather differ on the legal, social and economic levels.”
