UNSC urges Lebanese parties to preserve national unity

The United Nations Security Council issued a statement whereby it condemned the new explosion that rocked the eastern town of Hermel, calling on all parties to refrain from any involvement in the Syrian crisis.

The council's members urged all the Lebanese to preserve their national unity in the face of attempts to destabilize the country.

In a separate statement, the UN Secretary General's spokesman Martin Nesirky said Ban Ki-moon strongly condemns the attack and extends his condolences to the bereaved.

On Saturday the 1st of February, an explosion took place at a petrol station near the al-Mabarrat school at the entrance of the Hermel town, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The agency cited witnesses who said the explosion was carried out by a suicide bomber who entered the gas station and asked to buy fuel before detonating the bomb, leaving a metre-deep hole in the ground and setting the station and nearby cars on fire.

Caretaker Minister of Health Ali Hassan Khalil said that 3 persons were killed and 28 others were injured in the explosion.

Al-Nusra Front in Lebanon claimed responsibility for the attack.
