Cabinet votes for Nahhas’ draft

The cabinet did not vote for the deal struck between the economic committees and the GLC, instead it passed the draft law put forth by Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas. Nahhas’ draft sets minimum wage at 868,000 LBP, transportation included.

PM Najib Mikati struck a deal on Wednesday with the economic committees and the General Labor Confederation to raise the minimum wage to 675,000 LBP. Following the deal, the GLC announced that the strike scheduled for Tuesday, December 27 is canceled.

The GLC and the economic committees signed the deal that was reached with the cooperation of the cabinet. The cabinet held a session on Wednesday in Baabda Palace chaired by President Michel Sleiman to examine 54 financial and administrative items.

The session was preceded by a closed meeting between Sleiman and Mikati to discuss the overall situation.

PM Najib Mikati held a meeting in the Grand Serail with the economic committees headed by former minister Adnan Al Qassar and the head of the GLC Ghassan Ghosn in a bid to bring different points of view closer before the cabinet’s session.
