The head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt said Monday that the cold war in Ukraine has not yet come to an end, stressing the need to take into consideration the interests of the Russian Federation in the Crimean Peninsula, which was a historical, vital and military facility on the Black Sea that contributes to the protection of Russia’s national security and prevents its exposure.
He called for reaching a political solution for the Ukrainian crisis in order to avoid escalation and bloodshed.
In his weekly statement to al-Anbaa website, Jumblatt noted that there is fear that this cold war will negatively affect the already troubled and complicated Syrian negotiations taking place in Geneva.
“This potential negative effect may worsen the situation in Syria and negatively reflect on the Syrian people and its legitimate aspirations concerning freedom, dignity and democracy, especially after the Syrian crisis has entered its third year without any solutions expected in the foreseeable future,” he added.
On another note, Jumblatt pointed out that “it is inevitable to discuss a formula that combines all the proposals related to the Baabda declaration and Lebanon’s right to protect its borders against any Israeli aggression.”
