PM Salam meets LAF Commander Kahwagi over Arsal

Prime Minister Tammam Salam met on Monday with with Lebanese Armed Forces Commander Jean Kahwagi at the Grand Serail.

A statement issued by Salam's office after  the said that the PM instructed the military commander “to take all the necessary measures to control the situation in border areas and do what it takes to protect civilians.”

This comes as An-Nahar newspaper reported that Salam requested from Kahwagi to brief him over the situation in the border town of Arsal, mainly over the influx of Syrian refugees following  the latest developments in Syria's Yabroud.

Syrian forces backed by Hezbollah fighters took full control of the town of Yabroud on Sunday after driving out rebels, helping President Bashar al-Assad secure the land route connecting the capital Damascus with Aleppo and the Mediterranean coast.

The fall of Yabroud, the last rebel bastion near the Lebanese border, could sever a vital insurgent supply line from Lebanon and consolidate government control over a swathe of territory from Damascus to the central city of Homs.

Discussions reportedly featured high also over Tripoli's clashes and the measures adopted by LAF in the northern city.
A new round of clashes erupted in Tripoli on Thursday March 13th killing at least 12 and injuring 63 others.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
