Change and Reform bloc reiterates need to save Arsal, Tripoli’s residents

Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Tuesday that the Lebanese security apparatuses need to assume their responsibilities in the northern city of Tripoli and other destabilized Lebanese cities.

Kanaan’s comments were made following the weekly meeting of the bloc in which he called on Lebanese leaders to reach a common ground over the articles listed in the policy statement, mainly the security and the presidential elections.

He also reiterated the need to save Tripoli and Arsal’s residents.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Similarly, tensions have run high in the border town of Arsal after the Syrian regime, backed by Hezbollah fighters, seized control of the nearby Syrian region of Yabroud few days ago.

Arsal and its outskirts have also frequently come under air raids by Syrian government warplanes.
