LAF soldier killed in drive-by shooting in Tripoli

The state-run National news Agency reported on Thursday that a Lebanese army soldier was killed in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Tripoli.

The agency added that two masked men on a motorcycle killed army warrant officer Fadi al-Jubaily after shooting him in the area of Boulevard.

The Lebanese army issued a statement in this regard in which it noted that the military police launched an investigation in the incident.

Meanwhile, gunfire were heard in Tripoli which appeared later on that the Lebanese army is carrying out raids in search for the killer of soldier al-Jubaily.

This as Internal Security Forces Corporal Samer Dandashi came under fire in the Tripoli area of Bab al-Ramel.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.

The Lebanese army, who deployed in the city to restore calm and stability in the northern city, has come under fire from gunmen from both sides.

Several soldiers have been killed and injured in the different rounds of fighting that the city has witnessed.
