Former minister Karami: Geagea’s candidacy for presidency a black day in Lebanon’s history

Former minister Faisal Karami commented Friday on the declaration of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea’s candidacy for the presidential elections, noting that “during this black day in Lebanon’s history, the killer of Rashid Karami succeeded in illustrating the level of ethical downgrade reached by the basic values on which this country was founded.”

In a statement he issued, Karami said that “he, who was sentenced to death and was granted an unconstitutional and illegitimate amnesty, gathered the official figures of his party in order to discuss the possibility of him running for president.”

“This democratic discussion resulted in declaring this criminal as a candidate for presidency,” the former minister said in his statement.

In this regard, Karami addressed “the Maronite authorities that contributed to the establishment of the Lebanese Republic, calling on them to take a historical position that goes in line with the latest developments, in accordance with the national treaties.”
