Khattar to LBCI: A program has been put in force to buy new firefighting equipment

Civil Defense Director General Raymond Khattar stated on Tuesday that only 2 helicopters would have sufficed in the combat to put out the blaze that erupted Monday in Botshay's forest area, stressing that the issue of the firefighting choppers is a technical matter that the Lebanese Armed Forces’ Air Force should address.

Khattar told LBCI’s Nharkom Said that there is a shortage in the equipment of Civil Defense teams, pointing out that a program has been put into effect in order to purchase new firefighting equipment.

A wildfire driven by hot winds in the Baabda district threatened residential areas on Monday as firefighters struggled to extinguish the flames.

The blaze, which erupted in Botshay's forest area, left thick black smoke in its wake.

Botshay's mayor Michel Khoury said the wind-driven wildfire erupted at 6 am, noting that the fire damaged approximately 10 km of forest land.

Almost 100 homes were evacuated, he added, stressing that no casualties were reported.
