The follow-up committee of the Ministry of Information's contract workers issued on Friday a statement in which it declared that the MOI part-timers' decided to resume work after receiving promises from Speaker Nabih Berri to the list of demands they had handed over to the Joint Parliamentary Committees' agenda.

"After Information Minister Ramzi Jreij relayed to us Speaker Nabih Berri's pledge to list MOI contract workers' demands on the joint parliamentary committees' session agenda of May 13, 2014, and based on the Information Minister's personal confirmation of Speaker Berri's keenness on our case and the Speaker's endeavors to grant part-timers their rights, we have decided to resume work in all the ministry's departments, including the National News Agency, Radio Lebanon, and the Studies and Publications Center," the statement read.

On Thursday, Information Ministry contract workers went on strike, suspending activity at the state-run National News Agency's website, radio station and at the public sector Center of Studies and Publication.

The workers in Lebanon’s NNA and the other public sector media outlets suspended their work in a bid to pressure lawmakers to pass a law that would grant contract workers full-time jobs.

In this regard, they issued a statement saying they would be on a continuous strike until next Tuesday, the date of a session to be held by the Joint Parliamentary Committees.

The workers added that the strike had been triggered by the fact that the draft law related to their case was not on the committee’s agenda.

"If the deputies fail to endorse the bill next week, an open-ended strike will be held," the statement said.

The state-run National News Agency is a major source for Lebanese news.
