Lebanon’s Interior Ministry asks Syrian refugees not to hold political gatherings

The Lebanese Interior Ministry asked on Thursday Syrian refugees not to hold political gatherings or public meetings that may "affect the country's security and stability."

This request comes as the government remains adamant on distancing Lebanon from the conflict in neighboring Syria while ensuring good ties between the Lebanese people and the Syrian refugees, the ministry said.

In this regard, Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq stressed that the security forces will firmly deal with any act that undermines Lebanon’s stability.

Lebanon, an overburdened and under-resourced country, has been grappling with the rising influx of Syrian refugees.

More than one million refugees from Syria are now registered in Lebanon. The number is expected to reach 1.5 million by the end of 2014.
