Minister Bou Saab calls for correcting exams as of next week
Minister of Education Elias Bou Saab announced on Friday that he is going forward with issuing passing certificates for all the students who have applied for official exams, calling on teachers and the Union Coordination Committee to put an end to their boycott of exam correction.

"At the same time, and based on the recommendation of political parties, I decided to take another decision,” he added.

Bou Saab revealed that he urged the committees to start the correction of exams as of next week, noting that he believes the UCC would approve his demand.

“The cabinet took a decision to wait for 24 hours as I was tasked with saving the academic year. Issuing passing statements is a negative decision, but we were obliged to take it.”

On Wednesday, Minister Bou Saab announced that he will issue certificates for all students who sat for the official exams, adding however that he will freeze the decision for 48 hours awaiting new talks with the UCC.

The Union Coordinating Committee has previously vowed to boycott the correction of the official exams, pointing out that it will proceed with its protests until parliament passes the pay scale.

The Union Coordinating Committee has been on a continuous sit-in calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike.

The decision to revive movements came as a result of the failure of the Joint Parliamentary Committees to resolve the dispute on the Value Added Tax in a proposal aimed at securing the funds for the salary scale that was approved by former Prime Minister Najib Mikati's cabinet.

Former PM Mikati's cabinet endorsed the new salary scale for public employees in 2012, ending a long dispute that had triggered several sit-ins and strikes held by the UCC.

Former President Michel Sleiman signed the decree mid-June 2013 and it was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committees for further examination, however the law was never passed to parliament.
