Exclusive: Photos depicting clashes in Nahr al-Bared, Arsal

Former Commander of the Air Assault Regiment, Brigadier General Charbel Feghali said on Sunday that the Lebanese army is "the backbone of the country."

Feghali's comments were made during an interview with Nharkom Said TV show in which he noted that the army is "still strong."

He also noted that terrorism was spread with the global proliferation of technology.

On another note, exclusive photos depicting the Nahr al-Bared and Arsal clashes were aired during the episode.

Clashes erupted in Arsal on Saturday (August 01) when Syrian gunmen deployed across the region after the Lebanese Armed Forces arrested Syrian national Imad Ahmad Jomaa at a checkpoint.

The army said 18 soldiers have been killed, with at least 30 other ISF and LAF soldiers missing and 86 injured in the fighting.

Lebanese security officials say the fighters include members of al Qaeda's Syria branch, the Nusra Front, and an al Qaeda splinter group, the Islamic State, which has seized swathes of land in Syria and Iraq.
