Kataeb party leader Amine Gemayel met on Friday with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai in Bkerke.
Following the meeting, Gemayel said that he proposed 25 years the amendment of the constitution regarding the presidential polls.
Gemayel stressed that such a suggestion is not viable nowadays and may have dire repercussions.
He also noted the importance of carrying out the presidential elections given the regional developments.
On another note, Gemayel said that the developments in Iraq should be a sign to all sides to derive lessons and to make initiatives.
He concluded by thanking Patriarch Rahi for his trip to Iraq's Erbil, voicing hopes that the trip will pave the way for international action regarding the persecution of Christians in the region.
On Thursday, ten Change and Reform bloc MPs submitted a draft proposal to amend the constitution to allow the president to be elected by the people as opposed to parliament.
In this regard, MP Ibrahim Kanaan explained that the procedure consists of two rounds; during the first, only the Christians cast their ballots, adding that the two candidates who receive the majority of the votes will be transferred to the second round where all the Lebanese voters will then proceed to elect the president.
Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun, the undeclared presidential candidate of the March 8 camp, has already proposed that the Constitution be amended to allow the Lebanese people to directly elect the president.
Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Tuesday (August 12) the session tasked to elect a new president until September 2 for lack of required quorum.
Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum after Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25 with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.
Prior to the last session, nine electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.
On Wednesday Patriarch Beshara Rai, along with a delegation of patriarchs arrived to Iraq’s Erbil in a show of solidarity with Christians who had fled their villages in the wake of the Islamic State offensive.
Before heading to Iraq, Patriarch Rai said from Beirut International Airport that patriarchs are heading to Erbil to stand in solidarity with Christians who are being persecuted by the Islamic State and other terrorist organizations.
