Salameh: Our banks will be transparent on Syria measures

Lebanon’s Central Bank governor Riad Salameh said on Tuesday that the Central Bank will follow up on every complaint filed on the banking sector’s violation of international procedures taken against Syria.

During the opening session of the International Finance Corporation organized in Beirut, Salameh said: “Lebanon is committed to the implementation of international standards to ensure banking transparency. Lebanese banks, both domestically and abroad (…) will not operate in a way that will embarrass correspondent banks or violate their national systems.”

Salameh noted that the growth in deposits in Lebanon slackened in 2011, due to the negative political situation, rumors targeting the Lebanese banking sector and the Arab Spring.
