PM Salam: Politics in Lebanon should be put back on the right track
Prime Minister Tammam Salam said on Friday that politics in Lebanon should be placed on the “right track” to serve the interests of the Lebanese people.

“We must restore normalcy to our state institutions, resort to dialogue, and elect a new president,” Salam added.

Salam’s comments were made in his speech during the opening of Beirut's 58th annual International Arabic Book Fair.

Salam also mourned the deaths of Lebanon’s beloved singer Sabah, who passed away on Wednesday, and renowned author Said Akl, who passed away on Friday (today).

“We are proud to host this fair, especially in Beirut, the city that has witnessed hardships,” said Salam.

“We are living in an age of ignorance,” he added.

He also stressed that “Lebanon will remain at the forefront of free thought, thanks to its pioneering thinkers and artists,” he declared.

Lebanon has been witnessing a presidential vacuum since May when the mandate of Michel Sleiman ended.

Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a consensual candidate have thwarted the presidential elections.
