Lebanese army carries out precautionary military operations on outskirts of Arsal

The Lebanese Armed Forces carried out on Monday night precautionary military operations against posts controlled by armed men on the outskirts of the border town of Arsal and the al-Qalamoun region, the state-run National News Agency reported on Tuesday.

According to the agency, the military operation was carried out in the towns of Mar Tayba, Wadi Mira, al-Rahwa, Wadi al-Khayl and Wadi Hmeid.

Army choppers accompanied the operations that left several casualties in the ranks of militants, after illegal crossings were blocked with sand barricades.

The military also prevented the wounded from entering the town of Arsal, except for Mohammed Hassan al-Hujeiri, who was wounded along with his family in a room used by gunmen in Wadi Ajram.

The town's outskirts have come under Syrian raids ever since the uprising erupted in March 2011 in Syria.

Arsal has become a key conduit for refugees, rebels, weapons and injured people fleeing war-torn Syria.

The border posts were briefly controlled in August by Islamic State group and the al-Nusra Front jihadists.

After days of clashes with Lebanese army troops, the jihadists withdrew into the mountainous regions along the border.

But they took with them several security force members as hostages. Four have been executed so far and a fifth died of wounds sustained during the clashes.
