Syrian warplanes raid gunmen posts in Arsal

The state-run national news Agency reported on Thursday that Syrian warplanes staged several raids overnight Wednesday on posts controlled by armed men on the outskirts of the border town of Arsal.

The agency added that gunmen positions in the regions of al-Ajram, Khirbet Daoud, and al-Zamarani were targeted during the raids.

The news agency said that the raids caused heavy casualties in the ranks of the armed men.

Arsal's outskirts have come under Syrian raids in recent months. Damascus says the airstrikes are targeting “terrorists” fleeing the Syrian region of Qalamoun.

The mountainous region has long been a smuggling haven, with routes into Syria that have been used since the uprising began in March 2011 to transport weapons and fighters.
