Speaker Berri postpones election session until February 18

Speaker Nabih Berri postponed on Wednesday a parliamentary session tasked to elect a new president until February 18 due to lack of quorum.

The 18th session was adjourned over ongoing disputes between the rival political parties on a consensual presidential candidate.

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun is still the candidate of the March 8 camp in the face of Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, the candidate of the March 14 forces.

Disputes between the two officials had led to a lack of quorum in the previous electoral sessions, amid a boycott by the FPM MPs and Hezbollah.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since president Michel Sleiman's mandate ended on May 25.
